Avian flu infects another Sioux County dairy farm
SIOUX COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – The United States Department of Agriculture has announced a new dairy herd in Sioux County has been infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza.

- Reduced food intake and therefore reduced rumination
- Clear nasal discharge
- Decreasing milk production
- Sticky or loose stools
- Apathy

- Thick, concentrated colostrum-like milk
Officials say it's safe to eat chicken products. Consumers should just practice proper handling and cooking, including cooking eggs and chicken products to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
There are no concerns about the safety of pasteurized milk or dairy products. Pasteurization has been repeatedly proven to inactivate bacteria and viruses, including influenza, in milk.
Dairymen who suspect HPAI should contact their dairy veterinarian immediately and should report suspected cases to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship at (515) 281-5305.
