The Santa Barbara Public Health Department reports that it is continually monitoring the H5N1 avian influenza situation and that the risk to the general public in Santa Barbara County remains very low, according to the department.
To date, three human cases of influenza A(H5N1) (avian influenza) have been reported in the United States, associated with a multistate outbreak affecting dairy cows in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Texas.
All three infected people had direct contact with infected cattle and presented with mild symptoms, mainly eye infections and mild upper respiratory tract symptoms.
To date, no human-to-human transmission has been reported.
The CDC has identified targeted vaccine candidates that will be available if the infection begins to spread from person to person.
At this time, Public Health recommends the following:
- If possible, avoid contact with sick or dead animals, including wild birds, poultry, other domestic birds, and other wild and domestic animals (including cattle).
- If possible, avoid exposure to animal waste, bedding (litter), unpasteurized (“raw”) milk, or materials that have come into contact with or been in close proximity to birds or other animals suspected or confirmed to have the A(H5N1) virus.
- Do not drink raw milk. Pasteurization kills the A(H5N1) virus and pasteurized milk is safe to drink.
- Anyone whose work involves contact with infected or potentially infected birds or other animals should be aware of the risk of exposure to avian influenza viruses and take appropriate precautions. Wear appropriate and recommended personal protective equipment when in contact with infected or potentially infected animals. The CDC provides recommendations for worker protection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE):
- Avoid contact between pets (birds, dogs, cats) and wild birds.
