Summer heat increases the risk of skin cancer
SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) – Before the summer heat does more harm than good, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Having fun in the sun is good, but if ignored for too long it could lead to some often-overlooked cancers.
Skin cancer is curable, but there are ways to detect the disease early, and AHS Family Physician and Director of Wound Care Hyperbaric Therapy Jennifer Lane says you can track it using the “ABCs.”
“A is asymmetry,” says Lane. “The mole should be round, clean, and happy looking. If the mole bleeds easily, it could mean there's a malignant tumor there and a lack of blood supply. C means it's lightening or darkening in color, especially if there's a faint halo around the mole, which is a very dangerous sign that the body is trying to destroy something like a melanoma. D is a diameter larger than the eraser of a No. 2 pencil.”
Lane added that moles alone are not an indication of possible skin cancer.
“It could be a rash that won't go away, especially on the ears in people with weak hair follicles (people who are balding) or maybe little scabs on the face,” says Lane.
Summer is here and the need to protect your skin is greater than ever. Sunscreen, combined with some important habits, plays a major role in protecting you from the sun.
“A higher number is better, but it doesn't mean you won't need to reapply if you're going in and out of the pool or if you're sweating a lot,” Lane said.

“A stupid question is one that doesn't get asked. If you think something might be abnormal, assume it is until proven otherwise,” Lane said.
