“They're vampires and they're very good at what they do,” Riffel said.

Research has also shown that mosquitoes are capable of learning: if they bite you successfully, for example, they know that they might bite you again, and conversely, if you swat them off, they'll learn to avoid you.
Riffel said the current research being conducted at the University of Washington is important to help control and contain these insects because their bites can transmit deadly diseases and are responsible for nearly a million deaths worldwide each year.
Climate change is making it easier for more mosquito species to migrate to new areas, the university said in a press release.
Already this year, cities such as Las Vegas, Nevada, and Los Angeles have seen significant increases in mosquito populations, partly due to the emergence of new mosquito species.
