As infections rise, the government welcomes the first batch of MPOX treatment

The Ministry of Health received the MPOX-specific drug Tecovirimat (also known as TPOXX or ST-246) for the treatment of patients suffering from serious health complications due to MPOX disease.

Ministry spokesman Foster Mohale said processes were underway to secure further treatment, including vaccines, if required.

Mohale, however, said patients with mild symptoms would continue to be managed with supportive care to manage complications such as fever, pneumonia and skin infections.

“The agency urges all those, regardless of gender, age or sexual orientation, who are suspected to have symptoms of MPOX or who have had physical contact with known patients to visit a health facility for laboratory testing as anyone can be at risk of contracting this preventable and treatable disease.”

“Six more laboratory-confirmed cases of mpox (previously known as monkeypox) have been confirmed in the country, bringing the total number of cases from seven to 13.”

“Seven of the cases have been confirmed in KwaZulu-Natal, five in Gauteng and one in the Western Cape,” he said.

Mohale said hand hygiene was one of the effective ways to protect people from illness and prevent the transmission of diseases, and therefore urged people to always wash their hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, especially before eating, touching their face and after using the toilet.

Common symptoms of mpox include a rash that lasts for 2-4 weeks, fever, headache, muscle and back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes.

The painful rash looks like blisters or sores and may appear on the face, palms, soles of the feet, or groin.
