San Diego County reports surge in monkeypox and monkeypox cases
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego County is seeing a slight increase in Mpox cases, with health officials reporting seven new cases in May and June.
That's up from the previous average of about one to two Mpox cases reported to county public health officials each month so far this year.
The spike mirrors a similar increase in Los Angeles, which has reported 10 new cases in the past few weeks, according to the county. It's unclear if they are the same. Deadly strain spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is an infectious viral disease that caused a global pandemic in 2022, most notably affecting members of the LGBTQ+ community.
According to health officials, the virus is primarily transmitted through prolonged direct exposure to the Mpox virus via respiratory droplets or close skin-to-skin contact.
Symptoms of Mpox infection, which include a painful rash in sensitive areas, swollen lymph nodes and fever, may begin to appear around five to 21 days after infection and may last for two to four weeks, health officials said.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it is rarely fatal given the availability of vaccines and treatments, but severe outcomes are possible, especially in people with weakened immune systems.
Four of the cases reported in San Diego County this year have been in people who had not received the two-dose vaccine against Mpox (JYNNEOS).
“It is important that people receive both doses of the JYNNEOS vaccine to protect themselves against the Mpox virus,” said Dr. Ankita Kadakia, San Diego County's interim public health officer. said in a statement on Tuesday.
“We know that the summer months bring with them more events and festivals that can lead to the spread of Mpox, so now is a great time to get vaccinated or get your two doses and encourage your friends to do the same,” Kadakia continued.
Public health officials encourage unvaccinated people to learn more about the Mpox vaccination by talking to their health care provider, visiting myturn.ca.gov or calling 2-1-1 to find centers that can administer the shot.
For optimal protection, a second dose of the JYNNEOS vaccine is recommended 28 days after the first dose.
