Herd of “aggressive” coyote attack sheep in El Paso county, sheep positive for rabies
El Paso County, Colorado (KKTV)-Health alerts from El Paso County officials associated with attacks by coyote groups were sent Friday night.
The El Paso County Public Health Department said the sheep tested positive for rabies after being attacked by Coyote. The attack took place on August 4, at a property in Elbert in the Black Forest area.
“Public health requires citizens of the Elbert district of the Black Forest to be vigilant for wildlife, especially coyotes, bats, raccoons, skunks and foxes. It is important to contact your doctor and public health Immunizations are available to people who are known or suspected of having contact with rabies animals.
The Coyote pack was described as “aggressive” in the release sent by Sosa.
Take these precautions to prevent rabies:
-Use a licensed veterinarian to vaccinate your pet against rabies. Rabies vaccinations need to be strengthened, so check your pet’s records or consult your veterinarian.
-When walking or hiking with your dog, keep the dog on a chain to protect the dog and wildlife.
-Keeping cats and other pets at night reduces the risk of exposure to other livestock and wildlife. Keep the dog in sight (in a fenced yard or reed) during the day outside.
-Make sure the wild animals in the field are protected from the fence in the field
-If you think your pet has been exposed to wildlife, contact your veterinarian immediately.
-Do not touch or feed wild animals. Wild animals such as skunks and foxes adapt to the living environment when food is available. Do not leave pet food outdoors.
-If a person or pet is bitten or scratched by a wild or unknown animal, please contact your doctor and report to the El Paso County Public Health Occlusal Reporting Portal.
How to recognize sick wildlife:
-Healthy wild animals are usually afraid of humans.
-Sick animals often do not escape when discovered by humans.
-Wildlife suffering from rabies often behaves aggressively, approaching people and pets violently.
-But sometimes rabies animals are overly quiet and passive and may want to hide. If they are hiding, leave them alone. Rabies wildlife may also stumble or have trouble walking.
