Rabies-infected bat found in St. Louis County, officials say
The bats were found in Ballwin and Maplewood, according to St. Louis County Public Health.
St. Louis County, Missouri — St. Louis County Public Health Officials issued a warning to residents Wednesday morning after recently discovering two bats that tested positive for rabies.
According to a health department press release, the first bat was collected by health department personnel from a residence in Ballwin on June 15. The second bat was collected from a residence in Maplewood on June 23. These two are the first bats to test positive for rabies in the county this year.
County officials told 5 On Your Side that they find about five rabid animals each year, all of them bats, and that bats are usually first found in April or May.
Missouri typically sees 25 rabid animals a year, with 73 percent of those being bats and 21 percent being skunks, the department said.
“Most healthy bats are free of rabies (less than 1% to only 3%), but infection rates are higher in bats that exhibit atypical behavior (e.g., being daytime active, flying erratically, or flapping on the ground),” the county press release stated.
Most bats in the St. Louis County area have small, needle-like teeth that make it difficult to feel a bite, county officials said. People are encouraged to avoid direct contact with wild animals or animals behaving strangely.
Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms begin to appear, the agency said, and the rabies vaccine can prevent infection before symptoms appear.
If residents see a bat, they should immediately call county animal control at 314-615-0650 during business hours or 636-529-8210 outside business hours.
“If St. Louis County residents believe they may have been exposed to a bat, they can call DPH Communicable Disease Investigators at 314-615-1630 to discuss the need for a rabies vaccine,” the press release stated.
