Weight loss drugs may help treat sleep apnea: study
(The Hill) — A popular weight-loss drug may help treat sleep apnea, a new study finds.
Tirzepatide, a drug contained in the drug Zepbound and the obesity treatment Munjaro, was found to be effective in reducing the symptoms of sleep apnea, a condition in which breathing stops, when taken by obese patients for a year.
the study, Released on Friday The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, was conducted in two controlled trials in adults with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea and obesity, and found that tirzepatide reduced apnea-hypopnea index, body weight, and blood pressure, and improved sleep.
Patients taking the drug saw their sleep apnea episodes fall by nearly half, to nearly 60 percent, compared with just 10 percent in those taking a placebo.
Studies have shown that people who received the drug lost about 18 to 20 percent of their body weight and saw improvements in other symptoms.
Eli Lilly and Company is the manufacturer of the drug and paid for the research. The Associated Press reported.
The company has asked the Food and Drug Administration to expand the drug's use to treat moderate to severe sleep apnea, and a decision could come before the end of the year. Outside experts have warned that more research is needed before the drug can become the sole treatment for sleep apnea, according to the Associated Press.
The newswire also noted that an estimated 20 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, and that the disorder can cause short-term problems like snoring, brain fog and daytime sleepiness, as well as longer-term issues like heart disease, dementia and death.
