West Nile virus increasing in county, Turlock
The Turlock area is a West Nile virus hotspot in California, and authorities are calling on residents to take special precautions to prevent mosquito bites.
In the Turlock Mosquito and Eastside Mosquito Abatement areas, WNV was detected within the jurisdiction on 26 May, where the intensity of the WNV has increased over the past month, resulting in continued detection of WNV-infected mosquito samples. “Although mosquito populations remain mild to moderate in most areas, concern is the increasing sample of WNV-infected mosquitoes over the past month. Detecting earlier than usual is a storm with a high potential for human infection,” said district managers David Heft and Wakoli Wekesa. “We warn people to consider mosquito bites as a potential cause of WNV infection and ask them to take extra precautions to prevent mosquito bites during this period.”
The district will continue a surveillance program that identifies the source of mosquitoes and the activity of mosquito-borne diseases. Based on the results of surveillance data, airborne and ground applications are utilized as needed to reduce the risk of West Nile virus infection and other mosquito-borne diseases. The district expects more WNV and mosquitoes in the coming months.
