World Hepatitis Day

World Hepatitis Day (WHD) is observed annually on July 28. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), viral hepatitis affects more than 300 million people worldwide and causes more than one million deaths each year. Despite the availability of effective vaccines, prevention strategies, and medicines, hepatitis deaths are increasing worldwide.

CDC, the World Health Organization, and other organizations around the world recognize WHD by raising awareness about viral hepatitis, the burden faced by people with hepatitis, ongoing efforts to combat viral hepatitis worldwide, and actions people can take to prevent future infection.

How it spreads

Viral hepatitis is contagious and can spread before a person knows they have it. Different types of hepatitis spread in different ways.

• Hepatitis A The virus can be spread by ingesting even tiny amounts, usually through close contact with an infected person or by ingesting contaminated food or drink. Prevention and control of hepatitis A.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms of all types of viral hepatitis are similar and may include one or more of the following:

• Dark urine or clay-colored stools
• Diarrhea (Hepatitis A only)
• Fatigue

• Joint pain
• Loss of appetite
• Nausea, stomach pain, vomiting
• Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)

Hepatitis A

If you have symptoms and think you may have been exposed to HAV, your doctor can run a blood test.

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis C
