Whooping cough outbreak in New Brunswick's Acadia Peninsula
New Brunswick Public Health is warning of a reported outbreak of whooping cough in the Acadian Peninsula, where 11 cases have been recorded in the past two weeks.
“We are declaring this an outbreak due to higher than normal numbers of whooping cough cases in multiple locations,” Dr. Rita Gadd, medical officer of health for the Northern Region, said in a news release from the province.
Earlier this year, two cases of whooping cough were reported in the Edmundston region, and five cases were recorded across New Brunswick last year.
“Public Health is closely monitoring the situation and working with medical experts, community partners and the public to mitigate risks,” Gadd said in the release.
According to public health officials, the disease is easily transmitted primarily through infected droplets from the nose, mouth and throat.
It starts off with cold-like symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, slight fever and a mild cough. Over the course of a few weeks, the symptoms worsen and lead to severe coughing fits, ending with a high-pitched wheezing sound.
“Pertussis is a highly contagious vaccine-preventable disease that can occur at any age,” Gadd said.
She added that it is particularly dangerous for infants and young children who have not yet been vaccinated.
Primary care providers, including doctors, nurses and public health officials, can give the vaccine.
Anyone with whooping cough symptoms should stay home and contact their healthcare provider, call 811 or use eVisitNB, an online medical service.
Coughs are diagnosed through laboratory tests and treated with antibiotics, and early detection can reduce the spread and severity of infection.
Expectant parents and those who come into contact with children should ensure they are up to date on vaccinations, according to the press release.
