As COVID cases rise, CDC recommends everyone get up to date on vaccinations this fall
For many people who have already had COVID-19, reinfection often causes milder symptoms than previous infection, but people over 65, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems remain at high risk of serious complications from COVID-19.
Health officials are telling Americans to expect the COVID vaccine to be updated annually, just as flu shots are updated annually to protect against the latest flu strains.
“Our number one recommendation to protect yourself and your loved ones from respiratory illness is to get vaccinated,” CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen said in a press release. “Make plans for you and your family to get both up-to-date flu and COVID vaccines this fall, ahead of respiratory virus season.”
But many Americans aren't following the CDC's advice: Only 22% of U.S. adults and 14% of children have received their latest COVID vaccination shots, according to the CDC.
It's even lower in Georgia. According to the CDC, only 8% of adults and fewer than 2% of children are up to date on the vaccine.
While it's generally recommended that everyone over six months of age get an up-to-date COVID vaccination shot, doctors and public health experts say it's especially important for older people and those at higher risk of severe illness.
Age remains the strongest risk factor for severe COVID illness According to CDC researchers, the risk of a severe outcome increases significantly with age. Compared with adults aged 18-29, people aged 50-64 are 25 times more likely to die from COVID, those aged 65-74 are 60 times more likely, and those aged 85 and over are 340 times more likely.
The latest recommendations are:In 39 states, including Georgia, This marks the beginning of a summer surge, according to the CDC, which no longer tracks COVID case counts but estimates virus spread trends based on emergency room visits.
Levels of the virus found in wastewater samples, often an early sign of rising COVID cases, have been rising in Georgia, according to CDC monitoring, but it's unclear if that means a spike in cases.
While the rise in cases isn't all that surprising now that people are traveling and gathering indoors in cooler temperatures, health experts and doctors expect symptoms this season to be milder than past strains of the virus, but the latest evolving strains of the coronavirus appear to be more contagious.
Symptoms of the latest variant are well known and include sore throat, runny nose, cough, headache, body aches, fever, fatigue and, in severe cases, shortness of breath.
Earlier this month, the Food and Drug Administration, following guidance from its own expert advisory committee, told vaccine makers to target the JN.1 (Omicron) strain of the virus, but a week later, the FDA told manufacturers that an even newer variant called KP.2 might be a better target, if they were still able to switch.
