CDC warns of increased risk of dengue virus infection in New York
If you're planning on spending the upcoming Fourth of July outdoors, you should learn more about the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's warning about dengue fever.
The CDC is concerned about an increase in dengue fever in North America, specifically citing three areas: Puerto Rico, Florida, and New York.
“Dengue spreads worldwide,” said Dr. Kara Fikrig, a postdoctoral researcher at Cornell University, “This year has been a record-breaking year for the Americas. We have more dengue cases than ever before.”
Fikrig knows a thing or two about mosquitoes and dengue fever: She spends six months of the year in a remote area of the Peruvian Amazon that is only accessible by boat or plane.
Locals consider dengue fever their biggest health threat.
“We're seeing trends that are showing this mosquito spreading into places where it hasn't existed before,” Fikrig said.
Now back home, her research is focused on New York state and the more than 100 cases of dengue virus infection that have been reported so far this year.
“100 cases is a very large number and all of them could become seriously ill. It's especially concerning to see so many travel-related cases because doctors here aren't paying attention to dengue,” Fikrig said. “Dengue is not a common disease here.”
The CDC issued the alert this week after nearly 2,250 cases nationwide were reported in 43 states.
In New York, the CDC lists 21 counties that have reported dengue this year.
“This year has been unlike anything we've ever experienced before and we're only halfway through the year,” Fikrig said.
The dengue virus is transmitted by mosquitoes. In our area, the culprit is the Asian tiger mosquito, which can survive New York winters and act as a vector for the dengue virus.
“Dengue-carrying mosquitoes bite during the day,” says Dr. Fikrig. “People think of mosquitoes as coming out at dusk, but dengue-carrying mosquitoes are different. They bite during the day. They can even bite at dusk.”
According to the CDC, the most common symptoms of dengue fever include a high fever of 104 degrees, headache, muscle, bone and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, rash, pain behind the eyes and swollen lymph nodes.
“And it can worsen into severe dengue, which is a life-threatening condition that can cause bleeding and lead to death,” Fikrig said.
Dengue fever kills around 40,000 people worldwide each year. You can protect yourself by eliminating water sources on your property where mosquitoes may live, using insect repellents such as DEET, and wearing clothing that covers your skin.
