A young skunk found near the American River Parkway in Rancho Cordova tested positive for rabies this week. Sacramento County officials said the skunk was spotted last week near a California Department of Fish and Wildlife facility on Nimbus Road and was staggering and showing other neurological symptoms. Officials said CDFW personnel euthanized the animal and sent it for testing. The California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory confirmed Tuesday that the skunk tested positive for rabies. Rabies is a serious infection of the nervous system that is usually transmitted by the bite of an infected animal. Rabies can infect all mammals, including humans. Animals infected with rabies may show symptoms such as staggering, having seizures and becoming aggressive.
