CDC says COVID cases are on the rise again nationwide
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says COVID-19 cases are increasing in at least 38 states, particularly in the West and South.
The CDC also says the two new variants now account for more than half of all infections in the United States.
Cases are rising in Louisiana and Mississippi.
Thea Kasimier is a nurse in New Orleans who recently contracted COVID-19.
Kashimier said she suffers from asthma and now suffers from a chronic cough.
“I would have a runny nose at times, but I couldn't control my shortness of breath,” Kashimier said.
Kashimier also said the rising number of cases made her worried about the health of elderly people, like her 87-year-old mother-in-law.
LCMC Medical Director Hector Cabrera said the rise in cases could be due to increased summer travel.
Cabrera also said that thanks to treatments and vaccines, the situation is not as bad as it was at the start of the pandemic.
“The symptoms are getting milder, they're getting easier, and most people have immunity, but it's important to remember it's still out there,” Cabrera said.
According to the CDC, from June 16 to June 22, less than 1% of cases were fatal.
CDC guidelines say that once symptoms improve and fever subsides without the use of fever-reducing medications, you can resume normal activities.
Louisiana has seen a 15% increase in emergency department visits and a 25% increase in hospitalizations, according to LSU Health.
Experts stress that everyone over the age of six months should have the latest vaccine by this autumn.
Cabrera expects there will be a big surge in cases this winter, which is why he stressed the importance of continuing to administer booster vaccinations.
“Booster shots increase antibody levels and help protect against infection,” he said. “It's important to know there are things you can do to protect yourself against infection and things you can do to treat it after you get sick.”
LCMC Health said if you test positive, it's important to protect those around you by wearing a mask when you're around others, especially those with medical conditions that put them at higher risk for complications.
