Rabid fox bites woman in Atmore; health officials advise precautions
Atmore, oh.there is nothing) — The Alabama State Department of Health says an Atmore woman was bitten by a fox that tested positive for rabies.
According to the department, an elderly Atmore woman was unloading groceries from her car at her home when she was attacked and bitten by the fox.
The fox was transported to the Alabama Department of Public Health's Clinical Laboratory, where it was confirmed to be positive for rabies.
Health officials have warned that rabies is a viral disease that can be fatal if left untreated. The woman has since received appropriate medical treatment and post-exposure prophylaxis.
“Since widespread vaccination of livestock more than 70 years ago, rabies, which is primarily found in wildlife, continues to be a public health threat,” State Public Health Veterinarian Dr. Dee W. Jones said in a news release. “While attacks such as this one by rabid wildlife are rather rare, they highlight the risk that rabies continues to pose and hopefully remind people to be aware of the risks and continue to vaccinate their pets.”
According to ADPH, it's very common for domestic animals and pets to come into contact with wild rabid animals. Alabama law requires that dogs, cats and ferrets over 12 weeks of age be vaccinated against rabies. Horses and other livestock can also be vaccinated against rabies if recommended by a veterinarian.
Rabies prevention has many aspects. In addition to vaccination, local residents are encouraged to take the following precautions to avoid the possibility of contracting rabies:
- Please do not allow pets to run loose – keep them confined to a fenced area or on a lead.
- Do not leave uneaten pet food or leftover food near your residence.
- Do not illegally feed wild animals or keep them as pets.
- Stay away from any wild or domestic animals that are behaving strangely or abnormally.
- Regardless of their behavior, remind your children to stay away from stray and wild animals.
