Whooping cough outbreak in Brookline
Brookline's whooping cough outbreak is the state's largest this year, with 17 confirmed cases among students as of Sunday, state officials said.
All of the cases, except for one positive case at Runkle Elementary School, have occurred among students at Brookline High School.
Brookline health officials noted the infection could spread to young children and urged residents to report any symptoms to local health officials.
“Summer travel and visiting family increases the chances of pockets of infection spreading to those who are really at high risk, which is young children,” said Sigal Rice, director of Brookline Public Health and Human Services.
Whooping cough is a bacterial infection that causes inflammation of the airways, posing the greatest risk to infants and young children whose airways are narrow.

Rice said preliminary discussions are underway about reaching out to area summer camps as a precautionary measure.
City of Brookline officials identified the first positive student at Brookline High School on June 5, just weeks before the end of the school year. The infection appears to have spread among members of sports teams, officials said.
At the time, Brookline school officials worked with local health officials to notify all families.
Whooping cough can spread from person to person through contact with airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
Whooping cough develops in three stages. It begins with cold-like symptoms, such as runny nose, sneezing, and coughing, that last for 1-2 weeks and gradually worsen. This is followed by fits of uncontrollable, violent coughing accompanied by a whistling sound when inhaled. Symptoms can last for 6-10 weeks and are usually treated with antibiotics prescribed by a doctor.
The first symptoms appear about 7 to 10 days after infection. People with whooping cough can infect others from one week before the cough begins until three weeks after, or until they have completed a five-day course of antibiotics.
Whooping cough vaccination is mandatory It is open to all Massachusetts students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
Brookline High School officials said the school's vaccination rate is currently 99 percent, with very few medical and religious exemptions.
Studies have shown that immunity to the whooping cough vaccine can wane over time, and it is recommended that adults get vaccinated every 10 years.
“Please stay up to date on your vaccines, that's the best way to stop and slow any spread,” Rice said.
Communities in Bedford and Norfolk County have also reported cases of whooping cough this year. Massachusetts has had 157 cases so far this year.
