US gives Moderna $176 million to make bird flu vaccine

Scientists are concerned that exposure to the virus on poultry and dairy farms could lead to the virus mutating and gaining the ability to spread easily between humans, increasing the risk of causing a pandemic.

Traditional flu vaccines take four to six months to make using cell- or egg-based technology, and U.S. officials say they have received shipments of a large batch of a vaccine that closely resembles the current virus and is being processed into a finished vaccine that could supply 4.8 million doses as needed.
These vaccines could potentially be used to inoculate farm workers and others at risk of contracting the virus. U.S. and global health officials say the risk from avian flu to the general public remains low.
