Dengue fever alert issued for Florida Keys after local case confirmed – NBC 6 South Florida
It came just two weeks after two cases of dengue fever were discovered in the Florida Keys. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a national advisory About the increased risk of dengue virus infection in the United States.
According to the Monroe County, Florida, Health Department, dengue fever presents as a flu-like illness that can cause severe muscle and joint pain, fever and sometimes a rash.
“Symptoms appear within 14 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito,” health officials said. “Dengue is not contagious but is transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito.”
Although the majority of dengue cases reported in the U.S. this year have been travel-related, two high-profile cases in the Florida Keys were locally acquired, according to a Monroe County representative for the Florida Department of Health.
According to the CDC, there were 2,241 cases of dengue fever in 2024 alone.
Many countries are experiencing rising temperatures, creating the perfect conditions for dengue-carrying mosquitoes to hatch in large numbers and carry large amounts of the virus, resulting in an increase in dengue cases.
