West Nile virus will be detected for the first time in Massachusetts mosquitoes in 2024
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced Tuesday that for the first time in 2024, West Nile virus has been detected in mosquitoes in a Massachusetts community.
The state lab, which tests mosquitoes caught in the state for the virus, confirmed the presence of the virus in two samples taken in Quincy on June 25. The Ministry of Health said in a press release..
West Nile virus is typically transmitted to people through mosquito bites, and there have been no confirmed cases of it in humans or animals in Massachusetts so far this year, according to the health department.
