A Colorado dairy worker has been infected with avian flu, the fourth case in an ongoing outbreak that began in cows this spring.

Fourth case of bird flu reported in the U.S.: Colorado farm worker infected
Colorado health officials said they had provided personal protective equipment to the facility where the man worked.
“We are still collecting additional information regarding worker infections and PPE use,” state epidemiologist Rachel Herlihy said in a statement.
None of the farmworker's household contacts have symptoms and there is no evidence of person-to-person transmission, Herlihy said. State and local health officials are conducting follow-up investigations and will do additional testing if necessary, he said.
Two other dairy farmers have been infected. In April, a Texas dairy farmer Michigan Eye inflammation was also reported in May. Federal health and agriculture officials have repeatedly stressed the importance of dairy farmers taking precautions, such as having workers wear personal protective equipment when handling infected cows. Federal and state authorities have provided supplies to dairy farms but have not mandated their use.
Dairy workers usually milk the cows' teats by hand before attaching the milking machine. Contaminated milk can splash directly into the eyes or the virus can get into the eyes when the workers touch them with contaminated hands. Eye infections have been linked to past human infections with avian influenza.
Many public health experts say insufficient testing of cattle has hindered efforts to understand and control the outbreak, which was officially confirmed in March but may have been present in cattle since December.
A recent USDA study of H5N1 in 15 dairy herds and eight poultry herds in Michigan identified three risk factors for local spread: contaminated equipment or machinery, people who had the virus on their clothes or boots, and the animals themselves.
Federal health officials said this week that their risk assessment has not changed: While the threat to the general public remains low and dairy workers and others who come into contact with infected animals are at higher risk, U.S. officials are not recommending vaccination for any groups.
