AI dementia tool to begin testing in the US
An artificial intelligence tool, partly trained on an Australian dementia case bank, is to be trialed in hospitals across the US after research found an advanced model that can predict 10 types of causes of progressive dementia.

Aiming to make dementia diagnosis faster and more accurate, an international research team led by scientists at Boston University has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) model that can identify specific causes of dementia based on common clinical data such as MRI scans, personal and family medical history, medications, and neurological test scores.
In published studies, Nature Medicine On Thursday, the researchers measured the accuracy of neurologists and neuroradiologists using the AI tool and compared it to their accuracy without it.
The researchers found that the AI tool improved doctors' ability to diagnose dementia by more than 26%.
The tool can distinguish between 10 types of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body dementia and vascular dementia, which could lead to earlier diagnoses, said Vijaya Kocharama, an associate professor of medicine at Boston University and lead author of the study.
“In the real world, dementia can have multiple causes. It could be Alzheimer's plus depression, or Alzheimer's plus vascular disease,” he said. “We think AI can help by identifying these diseases earlier and helping doctors manage patients more effectively and preventing the disease from worsening.”
Kocharama said the tool is not designed to replace experts, but to help them make informed and efficient decisions.
Professor Carolyn Su, a neurologist and neurodegenerative disease researcher at Neuroscience Institute Australia (NeuRA), said that while AI diagnostic tools would not replace the need for specialist consultations, they could make timely dementia diagnoses “more accessible to many more people”.
