Study finds high costs of workplace injuries and illnesses
Recent research from Monash University has revealed the staggering economic impact of workplace injuries and illnesses in Australia in terms of lost working hours.
of Groundbreaking ResearchThe research, led by Associate Professor Alex Corley from the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, found that 41,194 working years are lost annually in Australia due to work-related injuries, illnesses and mental illness.
The study analyzed workers' compensation claims data to quantify the total number of working years lost (WYL) due to workplace injuries and illnesses. It found that workplace injuries and illnesses have a significant economic impact and injured workers typically experience long recovery times, leading to significant losses in productivity.
This study is the first to quantify the national burden of worktime lost due to compensable occupational injuries and illnesses, and also examines how this loss is distributed by age, sex, injury and illness.
Professor Corry explains that the concept is a more accurate description of workplace injuries and illnesses.
“Typically we track workplace injuries and illnesses by counting the number of people who make compensation claims and the time they miss work,” he said.
“This new indicator combines these two concepts and presents them in a more meaningful way that can be summarised as the number of people who have been out of work for a year.”
Professor Corley added that the WYL Index offers a new way of looking at the challenges posed by workplace injuries.
“For example, the rate of lost work years due to mental illness is much higher than for workers' compensation claims. This is because it takes into account the long periods of time away from work for each mental illness claim, which is not calculated by simply counting the number of claims.”
The nationwide survey included people whose workers' compensation claims were filed between July 2012 and June 2017 and who received compensation for lost work time.
