Experts expect COVID cases to surge after holiday weekend
TUCSON, Ariz. (13News) – Although COVID-19 cases have decreased over the past few years, health officials want to remind everyone that the virus hasn't gone away.
Over the last month, we have seen an increase in COVID-19 cases, and going forward, travel, gatherings, and sharing food will likely lead to further increases in cases.
When we think of respiratory illnesses like the flu, RSV, and COVID, we would normally think that cooler seasons would be safer.
“COVID-19 is not seasonal like influenza,” said Sairam Parthasarathy, a professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, “but it is seasonal in the fall and winter.”
In recent years, the Pima County Health Department has seen an increase in COVID and other respiratory illnesses during the summer months, and this year is no exception.
“We are starting to see a surge in cases, and with the surge in cases we are starting to see an increase in hospitalizations,” said Pima County Health Director Theresa Cullen.
PCHD says there's no need to worry just yet, but for those who are immunocompromised, it's still important to follow the protocols we've all heard: wearing a mask, washing your hands, staying outdoors or with airflow, and checking for symptoms.
“If you're sick, don't go out in public,” Cullen said. “Stay home and avoid putting yourself in a situation where you're spreading the virus. That's the most important thing.”
