Western researchers aim to develop new iron IUD
Researchers at Western University are working to change contraception as we know it.
What became an interdisciplinary research project began when chemistry professor Samantha Gateman noticed a gap in birth control options. “I had tried a variety of hormonal birth control methods and had really bad experiences,” Gateman says. “I was looking for a long-term, non-hormonal form of birth control. The only option I had was the copper IUD, but previous research had shown that it had a variety of side effects.”
Non-hormonal IUDs are known to cause symptoms like pelvic pain and stomach cramps. The device contains copper oxide ions to fulfill its purpose, but unfortunately, it also has the side effect of inflammation.
Currently, researchers at Western University are working to develop a gentler steel IUD as an alternative to the better-known copper IUD.
Gateman said the challenge with the material is its size limitations: “Other metals, such as steel and zinc, corrode faster than copper, so IUDs made from these metals would need to be larger to last, which would cause discomfort.”
The project is a collaborative effort between physicians, chemists, social scientists and women’s and gender studies experts.
The research team isn't just interested in offering a better alternative, says sociology professor Kate Choi: “We want to ensure that the new IUD we develop is a safe, affordable contraceptive option for everyone who needs it, including those in marginalized communities,” she says.
Developing low-cost, low-barrier contraception is not only helpful for people looking for alternatives to traditional methods, but it's especially prudent in today's climate. “Given the legislative changes affecting women's reproductive rights in many places, including the United States and Poland, it's increasingly important to have long-term, hassle-free contraception,” Choi said.
Dean Betz, a professor at Schulich College of Medicine and Dentistry who is working on using artificial embryos to study the effects of corrosive metals, emphasized how important collaboration is to the project's success. “I don't have expertise in metal corrosion, and the chemists have limited knowledge of embryo development, but together we make something special,” he said.
Looking to the future, Gateman says, “This project was started with passion and has the potential to make a big difference.”
