Governor Hawkel updates New Yorkers about recent increase in COVID-19 cases

Governor Kathy Hockle today provided New Yorkers with a COVID-19 update as new variants contribute to increased hospitalizations in parts of New York State and across the U.S. As social gatherings increase during the summer months and warmer temperatures keep people indoors, the Governor urges New Yorkers to get tested if they have symptoms and follow the usual precautions. “While the numbers are much lower than we've seen throughout the pandemic, we are closely monitoring activity regarding the latest variants.” Governor Hockle said. “By following the guidelines and taking simple precautions, New Yorkers can continue to enjoy a safe and healthy summer.”

COVID-19 hospitalizations are currently significantly higher than hospitalization rates at this time last year, but significantly lower than hospitalization rates at this time in 2022.

“New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James MacDonald said: “Hospitalizations are increasing, but are lower than in previous years. As people move indoors to escape the heat, infections increase. This is a good time to remind people to improve ventilation indoors whenever possible. Additionally, the routine vaccination order I signed last year is still in effect, so anyone who wants the updated vaccine can get it at a pharmacy.”

Researchers at New York's Wadsworth Institute are now using wastewater analysis more to monitor circulating COVID-19 strains. Federal and state wastewater monitoring has shown an increased presence of new variants in New York State and across the country, which is thought to be one of several potential causes of the current trends in COVID-19 case numbers and hospitalization rates, including increased travel and social interactions.

Anyone with symptoms should get tested for COVID-19, and if they test positive, they should contact their health care provider about treatments that have been shown to be effective in reducing the chance of a severe outcome. New Yorkers with compromised immune systems, pulmonary or cardiovascular disease, other risk factors, and older adults are especially encouraged to speak with their health care professionals about treatments for COVID-19. If they test positive, they should also avoid contact with others, including by missing work, school and social activities.
