Salvini's League senators want to end mandatory vaccination for children
(Bloomberg) — Members of Matteo Salvini’s League are calling for a rollback of childhood vaccination requirements as his party strengthens its populist crusade following last month’s vote to leave the European Union.
Italian senators from political parties recently proposed an amendment that, if approved, would remove the requirement for children under 16 to be vaccinated against measles, mumps, chickenpox and rubella.
The proposal has been pushed separately by lawmaker Claudio Borghi, who has voiced eurosceptic views in the past, while Italy's deputy prime minister, Salvini, has also voiced anti-vaccination positions at times, including during the coronavirus pandemic.
“The amendment is mine,” Borghi wrote on his verified X account on Saturday, using capital letters for emphasis, suggesting it was not planned at the behest of the party.
“On these issues, both proponents and opponents should have the freedom to choose,” Borghi wrote, but the proposal has already been rejected by some of his allies, such as Antonio Tajani's Forza Italia, as well as the Democratic Party.
Mr Salvini, leader of the League, an ally of Giorgia Meloni's government, has been adopting an increasingly populist rhetoric as his political group considers whether to join a new right-wing coalition led by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Mr Meloni has not commented on the proposal.
