Health officials confirm case of human plague in Pueblo County
Pueblo County health officials have confirmed a case of bubonic plague.
Pueblo's Department of Public Health and Environment said last week that preliminary tests showed the presence of the bacteria, which the department has now confirmed.
Plague can be treated with antibiotics, but prompt treatment is necessary to avoid serious complications and death. Plague is transmitted by fleas and occurs naturally in wild rodents. Symptoms include sudden fever and chills, severe headache, nausea, and painful, swollen lymph nodes.
Public health officials are still investigating the specific cause of this incident but are recommending people take the following precautions:
- Eliminate hiding places for mice around your home and remove weeds and rock piles.
- Avoid contact with dead animals
- To prevent flea bites, use an insect repellent that contains 20-30% DEET.
- Do not let pets sleep in the bed
- Treat your dogs and cats for fleas regularly
- Do not allow pets to roam freely in areas known to house rodents, such as prairie dog colonies.
- Store pet food in rodent-proof containers
According to the state health department, there were 10 cases of plague in animals in 2021, the most recent report available. That number includes six livestock. Pueblo County has recorded one human case from 2005 to 2021, according to state data.
