Is it true or false that the same amount of exercise benefits women more than men? |
A recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that women could achieve the same longevity benefits with half the amount of exercise as men. In the study, men who did 300 minutes of aerobic exercise per week had an 18% lower risk of death compared to inactive men. However, for women, the same benefit was seen with just 140 minutes of exercise per week. Similar results were seen with strength-building exercises such as weight training. The researchers attributed these results to the fact that women have less muscle mass, so they get more benefit from less exercise.

It is well known that pre-menopausal women are at lower risk of cardiovascular diseases due to the protective effects of oestrogen.”
These studies need to be interpreted with caution and in the appropriate context: they are observational studies based primarily on self-reported data and cannot be used to prove causation, and there are multiple confounding factors that are not adequately taken into account.
In general, it is important to understand that there is no single approach to exercise and health. Cardiovascular disease risk and lifespan are holistically influenced by a complex interplay of many factors, including genetics, comorbidities, diet, sleep patterns, stress, and lifestyle choices. While it's great that new research is being done in the area of exercise and longevity, it may not always be appropriate to oversimplify these concepts and reduce them to a purely gender-based equation.
