Two infected people found at Brooklyn shelter – NBC New York
New York City's Health Department said Friday that two people living at an immigrant shelter in the city have tested positive for measles.
The cluster of cases has been linked to a shelter on Hall Street in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. It is unclear where the two people became infected, but health officials are conducting contact tracing of everyone who stayed on the first floor of the shelter.
Anyone who is deemed to have had close contact and does not have proof of vaccination will be tested, and those who are not immune will be required to quarantine for 21 days.
Measles is a highly contagious viral respiratory disease, but people who have been vaccinated have a very low risk of contracting it.
“The Ministry of Health and Health + Hospitals are working together to ensure that everyone at risk of infection has the support and resources they need,” Director General of Health Dr. Ashwin Vasan said in a statement.
According to city records, 11 cases of measles have been reported so far this year. New York City had gone three years (2020-2022) without a case and only one case last year.
“Measles is a highly contagious virus, but because most New Yorkers are vaccinated, the risk to the community is low. It's important to remember that measles is preventable. The best way to prevent measles is to get vaccinated. If you haven't been vaccinated against measles, we encourage you to contact your healthcare provider to get vaccinated.”

People are considered protected or immune to measles if they were born before 1957, have received two doses of the measles, rubella, and mumps (MMR) vaccine, have had measles, or have had a laboratory test that confirms immunity.
Unvaccinated people have a 90% chance of becoming infected. Measles is spread through direct contact with nasal or throat secretions from an infected person.
Anyone who believes they may be infected is encouraged to contact their health care provider, local emergency department or local clinic before seeking treatment to reduce the risk of further infection.
Symptoms begin with a fever, followed by a cough, runny nose, watery eyes, and a rash. People are contagious from 4 days before to 4 days after the rash appears. Symptoms usually appear 10-12 days after exposure, but can appear as early as 7 days or as late as 21 days.
For people without evidence of immunity, measles preventive treatment is recommended as follows: MMR vaccine given within 72 hours of targeted exposure or immune globulin can be given within 6 days of exposure.
