Amid summer surge in infections, new COVID-19 variants unlikely to increase virus severity
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Cases caused by new variants of COVID-19 are on the rise again.
COVID-19 has seen a surge in cases every year since the pandemic generally subsided, but a quiet year in 2024 made this latest surge a bit harder to detect.
“So we don't have as many samples to sequence. We know from the local data — when we combine all of our data with the data from other states in the region — that variants like KP1, KP2, LB1, KP3, they're all spreading the infection.”
KDHE Genomic Epidemiology Director John Anderson said the new variants, commonly known as FLiRT, FLuQE and LB.1, are likely not as severe as variants seen in the past.
“If these variants were to infect populations that have never encountered SARS-CoV-2 before, the impact could be very different. But right now, we're in a pretty good position to prevent that on a population basis.”
This is due to the general immunity we have developed through vaccinations and past infections.
“Both will reduce the severity of the disease overall.”
“Almost all of us have had some form of COVID-19 in the past, either through infection, vaccination or both,” said Dr. William Schaffner of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, “which has led to a lot of what's called herd immunity and reduced severity of illness.”
Despite its familiarity, Anderson stressed the need to stay on top of the virus, which he said is not seasonal like the flu or other common viruses.
“SARS-CoV-2 can affect us in any season, mainly due to new variants that our immune systems have not seen yet and against which they offer less protection.”
KDHE Monitored wastewater Since 2020, they have been working with the CDC to sequence virus samples.
“The great thing about Kansas is that we're in the middle of the country so we can see what's going on all around us. What's happening on the coasts usually takes about a month to get to Kansas. By looking at what's happening in other parts of the country, we can get a pretty accurate idea of what's going to happen in Kansas.”
While it doesn't count individual cases, the CDC said 43 states have “increasing or likely increasing” cases. More than 75,000 people died from COVID-19 in the United States last year, according to its data.
The agency announced in late June that it would apply to everyone aged 6 and over. Administering a new vaccine Major vaccine manufacturers will launch their vaccines this fall. One of them is Pfizer. Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach files lawsuit Regarding the COVID-19 vaccine.
