Two adults diagnosed with measles in migrant center: Ministry of Health
The New York City Department of Health said two adult residents at an immigrant relief center in Brooklyn were diagnosed with measles this week.
The ministry said authorities are currently working closely with the Department of Health and Hospitals to identify other individuals who may have been exposed to the virus and assess their immune status.
According to the Department of Health, the risk of infection is currently limited to a specific floor of the Hall Street Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Centre in Clinton Hill, where the two infected people were residing.
The Ministry of Health said anyone suspected of infection who does not have proof of vaccination will be tested to see if they are immune. Those found not to be immune will be required to quarantine for 21 days, the Ministry of Health said.
Measles is a highly contagious virus that can be largely prevented by vaccination, and most New Yorkers, including many immigrants who arrive in the US, are vaccinated against measles, according to the New York City Department of Health.
In a statement, city health officer Dr Ashwin Vasan emphasised the importance of getting the measles, rubella and mumps (MMR) vaccination to prevent infection.
“The best way to prevent measles is to get vaccinated. People who have not been vaccinated against measles are urged to contact their healthcare provider to get vaccinated,” Vasan said.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms of measles usually appear 10 to 12 days after infection and include fever, cough, runny nose and a rash. The virus can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
