Eleven children in Washington have been diagnosed with a rare coronavirus syndrome | Coronavirus
Since the beginning of the new coronavirus pandemic, a total of 11 children in Washington have been hospitalized with a rare and serious syndrome.
Dr Marisa Dangeri, an epidemiologist at the Washington State Department of Health, said the first four cases of the state were reported in May, after which seven children were struck. The pattern of cases roughly follows the recurrence of the infection throughout the state this summer.
According to Dangeri, all the children were very sick. The majority were in the intensive care unit and some required mechanical ventilation. In Washington, no child has died of either a regular coronavirus infection or a related syndrome.
A poorly understood condition called pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome, or MIS-C, can affect the heart, kidneys, and intestines. Symptoms include high fever, rash, swelling, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. The cause appears to be a runaway immune response that spreads after the initial coronavirus infection.
“These kids feel terrible,” he said. “They are tired, weak and painful. They have a fairly high fever. They feel completely wiped out.”
But the good news is that all children respond well to treatment with no apparent long-term effects.
“We are really happy with their recovery,” McGuire said.
Much of Washington’s early MIS-C occurred in western Washington, where the virus was first infected. Currently, most cases have been diagnosed in central Washington, following a recent surge of cases, McGuire said.
There are three cases each in King and Yakima counties. Franklin and Snohomish counties each have two cases, and Skagit county has one. About 12 percent of the confirmed coronavirus infections in Washington, or about 7,300 cases, are children or teens.
Similar to state-wide adult coronavirus infections, color children are overly affected by MIS-C, Dangeri said. Of the confirmed cases of syndrome in Washington, 55% are Hispanic, 18% are Caucasian, and 9% are Black, Asian, American Indian, or Alaska Native.
The average age of children was 8 years old, 6 years old under 10 years old and 5 years old over 10 years old. By July 29, 570 children had been diagnosed with MIS-C and 10 died nationally, according to a CDC report released Friday.
Most children infected with the new coronavirus have very mild symptoms. It’s not clear why a small percentage of people develop inflammatory syndrome, McGuire said. Although the CDC report identified obesity as the most common underlying medical condition, most of the children in Washington had no underlying health problems, he added.
McGuire and Seattle Children’s are part of a national collaboration pooling data on MIS-C to identify risk factors and the most effective treatments.
