Tampa (Florida) General Hospital received A “significant” donation to develop a centre of excellence in colon cancer research.
The hospital did not disclose the dollar amount of the donation but called it “transformative” and “substantial.” The new center will be named after the philanthropist who donated it, the Susan and John Sykes Center for Colorectal Cancer Research. The center will be located within the TGH Cancer Institute and will support patient care, education and research to advance the prevention and treatment of colon and rectal cancer.
“The incidence of colorectal cancer in people under the age of 50 is on the rise, and cancer treatment is advancing rapidly. [new center] “The goal of this center is to serve as a resource to educate and train future physicians and nurses as experts in the field and to foster innovation in improving how colorectal diseases develop and are treated in our community,” Jorge Marcet, MD, medical director of colorectal surgery services at TGH Cancer Institute and who will lead the new center, said in a news release.
The donors, a group of local business leaders, said they were impressed by Dr. Marsette's expertise and the advances he has made in treating colorectal cancer patients. Decline The age for colorectal cancer screening will be raised from 50 to 45.
