Oxford malaria vaccine likely to save thousands of lives
A new malaria vaccine could save hundreds of thousands of lives over the next decade, its leader said.
Sir Adrian Hill, professor of vaccinology at the University of Oxford, said he hoped R21/Matrix M would pave the way for “serious” attempts to eradicate the disease.
The first doses of the vaccine began being administered in Ivory Coast on Monday.
It is the first malaria vaccine to achieve the World Health Organization's (WHO) target of 75% effectiveness in preventing malaria.
Sir Adrian told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: “If things go well, I think we can reduce the number of deaths per year from 500,000 to 200,000 over this decade, and then ultimately, probably over the next decade, we'll have a serious effort towards the eradication and elimination of malaria.”
R21/Matrix-M was developed at the University's Jenner Laboratory under the guidance of Sir Adrian.
“The vaccine was designed and developed in 2012 and has continued to evolve since then,” he said.
He said the relatively low cost of the vaccine makes it “realistic to administer tens of millions of doses in the future.”
“This is less than $4 per dose compared to $9 or $10 for traditional vaccines, which makes a big difference in low-income countries,” he added.
“That's why the development of this vaccine is so important, because everyone sees this as an affordable vaccine.”
The vaccine is usually given to children at 5, 6 and 7 months of age, four weeks apart, with a booster dose given one year later.
The blood is primed with an antibody that targets a malaria protein (circumsporozoite protein (CSP)).
