RSV vaccination programme begins in Wales
A new vaccine which protects infants and the elderly against a common but potentially dangerous respiratory infection is to be rolled out in Wales.
Respiratory syncytial virus RSV infections usually cause mild cold-like symptoms, but can also lead to bronchiolitis and pneumonia.
More than 1,000 babies are admitted to hospital with infections in Wales every year.
This program is offered to pregnant women (28 weeks or older) and women aged 75 to 79 years.
For most people, RSV causes a mild respiratory illness with cold-like symptoms.
However, infants under 1 year old and older adults are at higher risk of developing severe infections and being hospitalized.
Wales' Health Minister Elune Morgan encouraged everyone who is eligible to get the vaccine and said it was safe and effective.
Dr. Christopher Johnson, Vaccine-Preventable Disease Program Officials from Public Health Wales welcomed the announcement.
“This is a ground-breaking new vaccination programme that will protect thousands of the most vulnerable people from getting sick in the first place or significantly reduce their chances of becoming seriously ill, reducing the need for people to be hospitalised or visit their GP and enabling many more people to benefit from NHS services,” he said.
