New weight loss drug shows promise in relieving sleep apnea
CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – More than 15 million Americans are using injectable medications like Ozempic and Wegoby to lose weight, according to a new poll, but these products may do more than help people struggling with diabetes and weight loss — they could also be the key to managing sleep apnea.
“I wasn't sleeping very well, and I was snoring a lot,” said Steve Fujarski, who has sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea affects millions of Americans and can negatively impact many aspects of a person's health.
“I would wake up sometimes with noises. I was always tired. The doctor said I was snoring a lot… I just wasn't resting,” said Jim Thompson, another sleep apnea sufferer.
But the days of cumbersome CPAP machines may be coming to an end, thanks to the same drug that's helping many people lose weight.
“Obesity and obstructive sleep apnea in particular are very closely related, so it would be very intuitive to have that as an endpoint so that people could focus on it,” said Dr. Eric Yeh, a sleep specialist at University Hospitals.
He says he's been paying close attention to research on Zepbound, a new weight-loss injectable, and the effect it may have on people with sleep apnea.
Dr Yeh said obstructive sleep apnea is primarily caused by genetics and genetics, but age and weight can also make the condition worse, and patients prescribed weight-loss drugs for diabetes or weight loss may see other benefits.
“What we know now is that once we start seeing benefits for obesity, we will eventually see benefits for treating obstructive sleep apnea as well,” Ye said.
His goal for his patients is to reduce their Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI), which measures the severity of sleep apnea by counting the number of sleep interruptions.
Losing 10 to 15 percent of your body weight has been proven to reduce symptoms, but these weight loss drugs do much more than that.
“Currently, with drugs like Zepbound, we see up to about 20% weight loss, which equates to about a 50% reduction in AHI. But in a proportion of patients, we can see an even more significant reduction in AHI to about two-thirds of its original severity,” he said.
With significant weight loss, with or without the aid of injectable weight-loss medication, Dr. Yeh says patients will experience reduced apnea symptoms, increased energy and improved overall health.
However, since the cause of sleep apnea is very closely related to obesity, it is not yet clear whether these drugs will be prescribed solely for sleep apnea.
