First case of 'shockable disease' discovered in mountain lion in North America
A mountain lion euthanized in Colorado last year was the first of its species in North America to be documented with a “serious disease,” the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Department announced Tuesday.
CPW officials were forced to euthanize the sick cat in May 2023 after it was unable to move its hind legs. Analysis of the cougar's tissue revealed the presence of Rastrella virus (RusV).

Initial reports included more details about the animal and the virus: On May 12, 2023, CPW received a report of a 1-year-old female mountain lion exhibiting “severe hind leg ataxia and paralysis” in a residential area in Douglas County.
“The animal was reluctant to stand and had a significantly reduced ability to move or support its weight on its hind legs,” the study reads. “The animal moved by pulling itself forward with its front legs and rarely pushed itself forward with its hind legs. The animal appeared depressed, but was responsive to stimuli.”
Wildlife officials anesthetized and euthanized the animal and investigated it to determine why it appeared so sick, according to the CDC investigation.
The tissue samples and sequence data were collected from the mountain lion's “histopathology and metatranscriptome sequencing suggested a surprising disease.” Friedrich Loeffler Institute, Germany.
“We found particularly abundant and large punctate signals in the granule cell layer of the hippocampus and in Purkinje cells of the cerebellum, which resembles findings from a frightening case of a disease in European cats,” the study reads.
Since the 1970s, the dreaded disease has been documented in pet cats in Europe, particularly in Sweden and Austria, while in Germany, studies have reported that the disease has been detected in some zoo animals, including lions.
In their study conclusion, the researchers wrote: “The results indicate the presence of a RusV variant in North America that is distinct from those previously reported in Europe. The clinical signs, histological lesions and infected target cells observed in a wild puma in Colorado, USA, meet the case definition for severe disease.”
The CDC said more detailed studies are needed to see if the disease has affected other mountain lions in Colorado.
Small rodents of the genus Apodemus They may also be hosts for the virus. Although these particular rodents are not native to North America, several rodent genera live in Colorado, which may require testing for the virus, the study said.
“Remarkably, a very wide range of mammalian hosts for RusV were identified in Germany, including horses, mustelids, rodents and marsupials, raising concerns about the zoonotic potential of RusV,” the study concluded. “Considering the broad host range of the virus in Europe, it is conceivable that RusV could potentially cause neurological disease in any mammalian species in North America.”
Now that wildlife officials know what to look for, it should be easier to spot new cases, said Dr. Karen Fox of Colorado State University's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, lead author of the study.
“We will continue to work together as we continue to look for new cases of this terrible disease here in Colorado, while also learning what we can from our European colleagues,” Dr. Fox said.
