Measles outbreak (January 1, 2024 – July 13, 2024)
- The epidemiological curve of suspected measles cases shows an increasing trend from the beginning of 2024, peaking around week 22 and showing fluctuations in the last 3 weeks (Figure 1). The trend in 2024 is higher than those reported in 2023 and the average of the two years preceding the outbreak in 2021-2022 (Figure 2).
- A total of 1,634 suspected measles cases and seven associated deaths were reported in EW 28 of 2024. This represents a slight increase in the number of suspected measles cases compared to the previous week.
- The seven deaths were reported from six provinces: Kabul (2), Helmand (1), Herat (1), Kandahar (1), Kunduz (1) and Zabul (1). All the reported deaths were children under the age of five, two of whom were women.
- A total of 38,225 suspected measles cases and 167 deaths (CFR=0.4%) have been reported since the beginning of 2024. Of the suspected measles cases, 30,633 (80.1%) were children under 5 years of age and 17,323 (45.3%) were women.
- Since the beginning of 2024, Khost province has the highest cumulative incidence of suspected measles cases per 10,000 population (40.7), followed by Balkh province (23.7), Samangan province (19.0), and Jawzjan province (18.0) (Figure 3).
