Seven Southern Health Departments Report Dead Birds Test Positive for West Nile Virus

PULASKI COUNTY, Ill. (KFVS) – The Southern Illinois Seven-County Health Department announced that a dead bird has tested positive for West Nile Virus and one new case of West Nile Virus transmission from a mosquito has been confirmed in the seven-county southern Illinois region.

According to the release, on July 9, S7HD Health Services staff collected the dead bird in Pulaski County and submitted it to the University of Illinois Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for testing. Results were received and recorded from the health department on July 18.

Continued weekly testing of mosquito traps throughout the seven-county region confirmed four cases of WNV infection in mosquitoes on July 17. EHS staff from the seven southern counties collected mosquitoes from mosquito traps in Massac County. On July 18, testing confirmed a positive case.

Southern 7 says this comes after the health department reported in early July that mosquitoes trapped in Alexander, Hardin and Johnson counties tested positive for the disease. The traps were set up in each of the Southern 7 counties in May.

WNV cannot be spread by coughing, sneezing, touching, or touching live or dead animals. However, you should avoid handling dead animals with bare hands. If you dispose of a dead bird, use gloves or double-bag the carcass in the trash.

The virus cannot be transmitted by eating infected birds or animals, so make sure to thoroughly cook any poultry or mammal meat before eating.

According to S7HD, common symptoms of West Nile Virus include fever, nausea, headache, and muscle aches. Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks. However, four out of five people infected with WNV never develop symptoms. In rare cases, severe illness can occur, including meningitis, encephalitis, and even death. People over 60 and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness from the virus. If you have any symptoms of WNV, contact your doctor immediately.

There is no vaccine or treatment to prevent WNV in humans, and Southern 7 says people can reduce their risk of WNV by following the three “R's”: reduce, repel and report.

  • Reduce – Make sure door and window screens close tightly. Repair or replace any screens that have tears or other gaps. Keep doors and windows closed. Remove or change weekly all standing water where mosquitoes can breed, such as water in birdbaths, ponds, flower pots, wading pools, old tires, and other containers.
  • Insect repellent – When you are outdoors, wear shoes and socks, long pants, and a light-colored, long-sleeved shirt and apply an insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, lemon eucalyptus oil, or IR 3535 according to label directions. Ask a doctor before using insect repellent on young children. Products containing lemon eucalyptus oil or paramenthanediol should not be used on children under 3 years of age. Do not apply insect repellent to a child's hands, eyes, mouth, cuts, or irritated skin. Spray repellent on your hands and then apply it to your child's face.
  • Report – Report any areas where water has been stagnant for more than a week, such as roadside ditches, flooded yards, or similar areas where mosquitoes may breed. Your local health department or city hall may be able to add insecticide to the water to kill mosquito eggs.
