Multistate Listeria outbreak linked to sliced deli meat leaves eight sick at DMV
ARLINGTON, Va. (7News) — A multistate listeria outbreak has infected six people in Maryland and two in Virginia, officials said. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Authorities say Listeria outbreak Monocytogenes It's linked to the sliced meat at the deli counter.
Officials said 28 people have been hospitalized in 12 states and one death each has been reported in Illinois and New Jersey.
CDC officials said they interviewed several infected people and that 16 of the 18 reported eating sliced deli meats from a deli counter. Investigations are ongoing to determine which deli meats may have been contaminated.
Officials say so far they have not received any reports of people getting sick from eating the prepackaged deli meat.
CDC officials say people who are at high risk of contracting Listeria should avoid eating pre-sliced deli meats at the deli counter unless they've been heated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees before being served.

Refrigerators, containers and surfaces that may have come into contact with sliced deli meats should also be cleaned.
If Listeria spreads beyond the intestinal tract to other parts of the body, it can cause serious illness.
Pregnant women typically experience fever, fatigue and muscle aches, officials said, and Listeria infection during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth or life-threatening infection in the newborn.
In non-pregnant people, symptoms may include fever and muscle aches, as well as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.
Officials say symptoms usually begin one to four weeks after eating food contaminated with Listeria, but can begin as early as the same day or up to 70 days later.
