Two deaths from deli meat-linked listeria infections, investigation ongoing
At least two people have died as a result of an outbreak of Listeria infections linked to deli meat, according to information released this afternoon.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating the outbreak, which has infected at least 28 people, all of whom have required hospitalization, and whose cases have spread across 12 states.
In interviews with public health investigators, patients stated that they had eaten sliced deli meat (not prepackaged) at a deli counter before becoming ill. Sixteen of 18 people interviewed recalled eating deli meat at a deli counter.
The deli meats most commonly cited were sliced turkey, liverwurst, and ham. These meats were sliced in the delis of various supermarkets and grocery stores. At this time, CDC does not have enough information to say with any certainty which deli meats may be the source of this infection.
The ages of the infected people range from 32 to 94 years old. The patients' symptoms began between May 29 and July 5. However, because symptoms of Listeria infection can take up to 70 days to appear, more cases may be identified. The CDC also reports that some people are not seeking medical attention and are not being tested for Listeria infection, so it is likely that some cases are not confirmed.

The CDC warns not to eat meat sliced at the deli counter unless it's reheated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit or steaming hot. Allow it to cool before eating. Listeria can also grow on foods stored in the refrigerator, but it's easily killed by cooking the food to a high enough temperature.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious, sometimes life-threatening, infections even if it does not look or smell spoiled. Anyone who develops symptoms of Listeria infection should seek medical treatment and tell their doctor that they may have been exposed to Listeria.
Additionally, anyone who has eaten sliced deli meat should be on the lookout for symptoms in the coming weeks, as it can take up to 70 days after exposure to Listeria bacteria for symptoms of listeriosis to appear.
Symptoms of Listeria infection include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and stiff neck. Listeria infections can resemble other illnesses and require special laboratory tests to diagnose.
Pregnant women, the elderly, young children, and people with weakened immune systems, such as cancer patients, are at particular risk for severe illness, life-threatening infections, other complications, and death. Although infected pregnant women may only experience mild flu-like symptoms, infection can lead to premature birth, infection of the newborn, and even stillbirth.
