COVID-19 is reaching high levels in several states, including Connecticut
Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say there is evidence of high levels of COVID-19 virus transmission in at least eight states, including Connecticut.
The evidence comes from tests carried out at wastewater treatment plants.
Officials tell News 12 that the newest variant, called FLiRT, is driving an increase in cases.
“If you're traveling this summer and plan on being away for any length of time, bring along an at-home COVID-19 test kit,” said Dr. Asha Shah, director of infectious diseases at Stanford Health.
Shah said FLiRT is highly contagious but not enough to cause concern, adding that although the disease can lead to hospitalization with symptoms such as shortness of breath and weakness, patients do not often require intensive care.
“If you're at high risk for severe illness, bring a mask,” Shah acknowledged. “Make sure you check the ventilation. The good thing about summer is that you can be active outdoors. It's safe outdoors.”
