In recent years, more prescriptions for GLP-1 drugs have been prescribed to treat obesity than type 2 diabetes, raising concerns about availability and shortages, according to a study published July 23. Annals of Internal Medicine.
Researchers from Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia used a national database to analyze the medical records of 45 million people who had at least one outpatient or inpatient visit between 2011 and 2023. They identified about one million new GLP-1 users during this period and classified them based on the presence or absence of diabetes, obesity, and other related conditions.
Here's a breakdown of the changes the researchers observed:
- Between 2011 and 2014, on average, approximately 65% of GLP-1 users had type 2 diabetes, and approximately 47% had a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher.
- The pattern changed from 2019 to 2023, with an increasing proportion of new GLP-1 prescriptions for obesity. Over 66% of new user prescriptions in that period were for patients with a BMI of 30 or greater, and 54% were for patients with type 2 diabetes.
“This data indicates that more health care providers are aware of the benefits of these medications in treating obesity, which is an important public health change,” said Ye-Hui Yeo, MD, study author and clinical research fellow in the Karsch Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Cedars-Sinai. Said “However, concerns have also been raised about potential drug shortages and the need to ensure people with diabetes have access to these treatments,” the agency said in a news release.
