Study validates Stockholm 3 test for prostate cancer in ethnically mixed population
The Stockholm 3 prostate cancer test, developed in Sweden, uses an algorithm to determine the likelihood that a patient has clinically significant cancer using a combination of proteins and genetic markers taken from a blood sample.
A study of over 90,000 men has shown that Stockholm3 delivers significantly better results than current PSA standards. The test improves prostate cancer diagnosis by reducing unnecessary MRIs and biopsies and identifying significant cancers in men with low or normal PSA levels.
However, previous studies have been conducted mainly in Scandinavia and with mostly white subjects, making it unclear whether they could be generalized to other parts of the world. A group of researchers from Sweden and the US are now investigating how well the method works in an ethnically mixed group of men in the US and Canada.
The study involved more than 2,000 men from 17 different clinics, of which 16% were Asian, 24% were African American, 14% were Latino, and 46% were white American. All participants had been referred for a prostate biopsy based on an elevated PSA score, abnormal rectal exam, MRI scan, or other suspicious clinical findings.
Before the biopsy was performed, blood tests were performed together with clinical data relevant to the Stockholm 3 test, which was performed blinded to the biopsy results.
The analysis found that clinically significant cases of prostate cancer were present in 29% of men overall, slightly more prevalent in African-Americans and slightly less prevalent in Asians. The study also found that the Stockholm-3 test was able to reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies by almost half (45% reduction: from 1,226 to 673) and was equally effective at detecting all clinically significant cases. Results were similar across different ethnic groups.

He says the study will answer several important questions and lead to more widespread use of the method.

The research was funded by the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Cancer Society and A3P Biomedical AB, which holds the development rights to the Stockholm 3 test. Hari T. Henrik Gronberg and Martin Eklund are inventors on the patent for the method.
