'Highly contagious' variant spreads in Quebec, driving up COVID-19 cases – Montreal
In Quebec, COVID-19 The positive test rate rose from 2.3% in March to 16.3% in the first week of July.
In Canada, the newest variant, KP.3, accounts for the majority of new cases.
“We are seeing a lot of cases at the moment because it is very contagious,” explained Dr. Nicolas Brousseau, a public health physician at the Quebec Provincial Institute of Public Health (INSPQ), “but it is not more severe than other variants, so the hospitalization rate is not as high.”
Emergency rooms have been over capacity for the past month, and COVID-19 is just one of many factors causing the backlog.

The surge in new cases has been linked to summer gatherings and travel.
“If you don't want to get sick on vacation, you may need to take some precautions, like wearing a mask when you get on an airplane,” said epidemiologist Dr. Christopher Labos.
With cases expected to rise in the fall as children return to school, some people may want to consider getting vaccinated.
INSPQ strongly encourages vulnerable people to get the booster shot, including seniors, long-term care facility residents, those with immunocompromised or chronic illnesses, and health care workers.
“If you're a young, healthy adult, the risk of hospitalization or severe illness is very low,” Brousseau added. “It's a personal decision.”
Experts say all currently available vaccines are equally effective, but Brousseau recommends waiting for the updated vaccines as new ones adapted to current circulating COVID-19 strains are in development.
Labos said as long as vaccines only target the virus surge, new waves of infections will occur.
“If we can target the part of the virus that doesn't mutate, that will stabilize it no matter what mutations emerge,” he explained.
