How having friends can help you live longer |
We learn about friendship and companionship from our families. Our parents are our first friends. Then, when we go out into the world, we make friends outside of our homes. We make many friends throughout our lives. Some of them stay with us forever, some don't. Some of them give us fond memories, some don't. But every friend gives us something to remember.
Friends are like anchors in the ocean of life, providing stability, comfort and joy.
Friends offer us a friendship that goes beyond family ties and create a space where we can be ourselves without judgement. They share our laughs, create unforgettable memories and support us during difficult times. Having friends means we have someone to rely on, someone to confide in and someone to celebrate victories big and small with. Friends teach us the value of empathy, kindness and listening. Good friends understand us in ways others cannot and give us a unique bond that enriches our lives.
“If you want to live a long and healthy life, you should prioritize those around you.”
In his latest book, The Power of Connection, author and BBC journalist David Robson explores the compelling evidence that shows people with strong social networks tend to be in better health than those who feel isolated. For his book, Robson delved into the science, investigating the “biopsychosocial” model of health. His research revealed that friendships play a key role in influencing many aspects of our well-being, from strengthening our immune systems to affecting survival rates of heart disease.
Robson talks about Lester Breslaw, who studied the habits and behaviors that lead to greater success. longevityAfter observing 7,000 participants, Breslow discovered that the keys to good health were not to smoke, to drink alcohol in moderation, to get seven to eight hours of sleep a night, to exercise, to avoid snacking, to maintain a healthy weight, and to eat breakfast. These seven factors became known as the Alameda Seven, named after the Alameda County to which the participants belonged. A few years later, Breslow's colleagues Lisa Berkman and S. Leonard Syme discovered an eighth factor. Social connections.
Social connections and loneliness: WHO's efforts
The impact of loneliness on an individual's physical and mental health is becoming so devastating that the World Health Organization (WHO) has announced it will establish a new commission on social connections in 2023. “High rates of social isolation and loneliness around the world have serious implications for health and well-being. People without enough strong social connections are at higher risk of stroke, anxiety, dementia, depression and suicide,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO.
Promoting social connections among young people
Loneliness is a universal human experience that can affect individuals of all ages, including young people. Despite the perception that young people are naturally surrounded by peers and social activities, many young people feel isolated or disconnected. Social isolation in young people can result from a variety of factors, including changes such as moving to a new place, changing schools, or changes in friendships.
In today's digital age, where social media often portrays the ideal form of social interaction, young people can suffer from feelings of loneliness exacerbated by comparison and the pressure to fit in.
Additionally, academic pressures, family dynamics and personal anxieties can further exacerbate young people's feelings of loneliness. It is important to recognise that loneliness can happen to anyone, anywhere, regardless of age or situation.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence.
