“This appears to be a new breakthrough in HIV prevention. If this injection were widely available at low cost it could dramatically reduce the risk of new HIV infections around the world,” said Sarah Palmer, co-director of the Centre for Virus Research at the Westmead Institute of Medical Research in Sydney, who was not involved in the peer-reviewed study. “The focus of this study on young women in Africa, who are at very high risk of HIV infection, is particularly encouraging.”
