A US study that looked at 69 chemicals, including four commonly used in India, found that exposure to certain pesticides has an impact comparable to smoking in increasing farmers' cancer risk.
The researchers found that for three types of cancer – non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, leukemia and bladder cancer – the effects of pesticide exposure were “more pronounced” than smoking, a widely recognised cancer risk factor.
“We present a list of pesticides that are major causes of some specific cancers, but we strongly emphasize that it is the combination of all of them that is important, not just any single pesticide,” said lead author Isain Zapata, an associate professor at Rocky Vista University in the US.
The list compiled in a study published in the journal Frontiers in Cancer Control and Society includes 69 pesticides, including 2,4-D, acephate, metolachlor and methomyl. These four are among the many commonly used in India to combat various threats to crop yields, including pests and weeds.
For their analysis, the researchers obtained cancer incidence rates for counties across the United States from 2015 to 2019 from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The researchers found that certain cancer risks were likely associated with the types of crops grown in a region, suggesting that regional aspects need to be taken into account when assessing the overall picture.
For example, certain regions in the Western United States have elevated risks of all cancers, bladder cancer, leukemia, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, but agricultural use patterns differ: Western states are known for producing more vegetables and fruits than the Midwest and North Central regions of the United States, the study authors said.
The nationwide, population-based study is the first comprehensive analysis to “link a cancer risk factor that is no longer in question (smoking) to pesticide use,” the authors said.
Although some pesticides were discussed more frequently than others, the researchers said it was unlikely that any single pesticide was the culprit, since pesticides are not used in isolation.
“In the real world, people are unlikely to be exposed to a single pesticide, but rather are more likely to be exposed to a mixture of pesticides in their communities,” Zapata said.
